Staying healthy during the seasonal changes

Standard

As the seasons change we need to put in place aids to maintain good health.  For our diets if we can keep our systems free of acidity which means really to have an alkaline balance we may stay free of colds and other illnesses.  Do you find yourself catching colds easily and/or frequently?  Do you notice that your tongue has a grayish coating? Do you notice that you have to urinate frequently? Oftentimes when we do not have the right mineral balance we cannot hold water in our system and we might easily change that by taking Himalayan salts once in the morning and once in the evening.  Himalayan salt crystals have about 108 minerals and the table salt only has 3.  One can take a half teaspoon in warm water and drink a glassful or my preferred way is to use the Himalayan salt crystals that come in a chunk size.  I keep the chunks in a glass jar with water and keep refilling.  I use it to cook with so that I am getting it throughout the day.  This ensures that the water that I drink goes fully into hydrating my cells instead of filling the toilet.  I see many who are athletic who are walking or jogging always carrying water bottles and visiting the bathroom regularly and I wonder why they invest so much for the toilet!   Next do you notice that you are craving sugary, salty and fatty foods regularly…these are telltale signs that our systems are acidic.  Also those who have a high meat/flesh diet often promote acidosis.  There is a cycle when sugar is craved next salt is craved, notice this cycle and know you may put a stop to it easily to prevent your immune system from being depleted and unable to fight off colds, flu and viruses.  When we are ready to break the cycle we can take alkaline foods and juices such as green juices.  Green juices and foods for example are:  kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, ginger, that we may add carrot and a little apple.  Also wheatgrass juice is so packed with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and most importantly chlorophyll  that builds our cells to its strongest.  For those who are not vegan, meaning they take dairy and meats, try during this time to limit both dairy and meats and stay with more green vegetables and fruits.  Grapes, raspberries, cherries, strawberries, cranberries, oranges, kiwis are some of the best choices for boosting the immune system and staying balanced.  Do look for my earlier posts about Apple cider vinegar (ACV) (look for September 1st post) and I recommend Bragg products only as they are organic and the highest quality made for this kind of health regimen.  I take 3 tablespoons in warm water along with a half teaspoon of turmeric powder every morning.  This ACV regimen is one of the best ways to make sure we can stay healthy and balanced.  For those new to this I recommend that you take one teaspoon at first to get use to the taste, in 8 ounces of warm water and you could choose to cut that with grapefruit juice to help get used to the taste.  Also some may choose to add agave for a sweetener that doesn’t have the calories of honey.  Honey does have excellent healing properties if it is truly organic and raw, which means you probably won’t find it in the supermarket chains but in a health food store or farmer’s market.  As I am staying with the vegan routine I am only keeping the raw organic expensive honey for emergencies like sore throat.  Being considerate of the bees is another gentler way to co-exist, as the bee population has been plagued by human ingestion.  We have so many other natural plant-based sweeteners like agave and stevia and also moving away from the sweet craving is what the whole post is about to prevent acidity.  When we decide to face our health and make decisions to eat for our health then we can make choices that are flavorful without damaging our systems.  The ACV regimen keeps our kidneys working to optimal levels flushing out toxins so they don’t fester into illness.  Do review the earlier posts about ACV and try to use only the Bragg product.  They have a great website that is packed with volumes of information about health, recipes, inspirational articles.  I often order my products from their website as they have sales regularly.  Do know that ACV is a very inexpensive item in most  stores and one of the best values for a healthy item for your home and body.  Stay well and share this with your friends and family….if we all are healthy there will be less germs spreading!!!! Happy Diwali…..What’s the Significance of this Indian Festival?

Asato Ma Sat Gamaya Tamaso Ma, Jyotir Gamaya Mrityor Ma, Amritam Gayama, Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti OM

We recite this invocation at every yoga sadhana: Take us from the unreal, to the real, take us from darkness to Light, Take us from death to immortality.  This is from the ancient Brihadaranyak Upanishad, 1.3.28….

This reference about darkness and light relates to ignorance and knowledge.  Ignorance, like darkness obscures true understanding.  The remedy for darkness is light, and the remedy for ignorance  is knowledge of one’s own true nature, our Divine Spirit.

The cultural significance is this festival is a way to enjoy and celebrate our Spiritual Birth, our Second Birth.  Diwali celebrations take place all over the whole subcontinent of India, from north to south, east to west, from different religions from Hindu, Sikh to Jain and Christian, including Muslim as it is an agrarian harvest celebration and the business of farming includes all who consume.  The festival spreads over five days, historically marked the end of the harvest season and beginning of the winter season.  Farmers give thanks for their bounty and wealth.  Lakshmi is the deity associated with wealth and is celebrated to bring continued good fortune for families.

Diwali, (spelled differently depending on the state and religious background) means lighting diyas (small clay vessels filled with oil and lit with cotton wicks).  These lights are arranged in huge arrays in beautiful patterns like the rangoli drawings (like the background pictures on this homepage.  The picture just above this text has tea light candles as any candle may be used and fire crackers are often lighted to celebrate the spark of our inner light.

The Yogic and Spiritual significance celebrates the realization of our own inner Light.  Honoring, Atman, the pure, infinite and eternal Divine Energy which can be awakened in all people.  This celebration of victory of good over evil signifies the victory of self-knowledge over ignorance, light over darkness.  The awareness that we are much more than our physical body, but an infinite, ever-present Spirit.  Every year people celebrate their birthday and Diwali celebrates their second birth…the Spiritual Awakening…our Inner Light…the true reality for All.

I read this as a post on Facebook…“Auditions are being held for you to be yourself…Apply within.”

May you choose to wake up and realize your Inner Light!  HAPPY DIWALI!!!!!!!!!

When my Guruji the Late Shri Radha Kant Jha was in residence at our Omlink Studio he shared his interpretation of Namaskar:

“... When we bow our heads we lower our ego, when we join our hands we limit our physical might, (any disagreement/violence) to another, and with the hand gesture placed at our hearts we let our heart energy guide us as we let our Divine Spirit Rise in union with All.  Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti OM.”

The seven chakras and their significance | The Isha Blog

The seven chakras and their significance | The Isha Blog.

I guess it’s because of the Yoga media hype that so many have heard the word chakras.  This media has given a heightened mystical twist about the chakras and so many students, especially those new to the practice are so fast to ask about how they can know and experience their chakras.   These are the same students who do not regularly show up for classes, are easily distracted and make excuses, fall ill over and over again.  It is so amazing that the media can trick us into believing that we can “own” and master a phenomenon, which does not exist on the physical plane.  Why would someone think they can access such an advanced stage of awareness when they have not yet decided to engage themselves regularly on the physical plane?  To access experiences that grow cumulatively we must invest and dedicate ourselves on a regular basis.  Just like the steam from boiling water evaporates leaving cooler temperatures when the fire dies down, our energies lose their vibration in a similar way.   Only when we seek an authentic hatha yoga with the support and guidance of an experienced teacher will we be able to access the more subtle aspects of awareness.  But hey, with so many distractions that we can easily become engaged in and possibly addicted to…who needs awareness…especially at the cost of having to divide our time or worse divert our time away from our distractions.   Mediocrity is the norm nowadays and with it comes lower vitality until it ebbs away and morphs into illnesses from anxiety, nervous disorders, disease in various forms.  The easy solution for many becomes medication that may give acceptable results along with toxic buildup.  Why is it so hard to choose to make time to create ease, wellness and pleasantness for ourselves? Why is it so easy to ask the hard questions rather than sit and apply the easy practices that create Joy?  Witness the silly monkey brain, jumping all around, never staying still for long.  Witness the carrot and stick behavior we take part in: we can follow our job description in  a routine fashion for days, months, years because it brings the pay check and benefits.  In other areas of our lives we cannot easily follow regimes, why?  Bottom line….doing the Isha Kriya is easy….practicing hatha yoga is easy…..knowing your chakras is hard….but the only way to get there is to make a commitment to staying on the path with your daily practices.   Let’s start where it is easy and possible to gain mastery.  Maybe you may experience the powers from the chakras, maybe not, but you will surely know pleasantness if you stay with your practices.  When we choose to become conscious we choose reality and I choose to keep on the path with my practices.  I wish that you too may choose to stay on your path with your practices daily….OM

▶ Can Work be Used as Sadhana? – Sadhguru – YouTube

In this YouTube Sadhguru plainly explains why it is so important to daily work on our inner peace.  He says, “creating an inner space is very important because that energy is not subject to anything else.”  He goes on to say that some people no matter how noble their work after some time of being fully engaged in that they begin to become miserable to greater or lesser degrees.  So creating and nurturing, by daily practice of some Kriya such as Isha Kriya is the key to maintain ease and success with all other aspects of our involvement in this life.   I like to use the imagery of tending to one’s own garden, planting, watering, feeding with nutrients, harvesting yields bounties of plants, flowers, vegetables, just like our inner realm.  When we take the time to nurture we are rewarded, working on our inner sacred space allows us to move with ease and everything becomes possible.  Sadhguru repeats, ” Establish who you are and then…Act…” Thank you for taking the time to read and watch this post, please do share with others especially those who may be workaholics, Namaste OM.

n.b. sadhana is sanskrit for practice…in Yoga we call our practice, Practice for conscious living.314507_186402684832978_1040794516_n
